Mathematics
At Wyndham Park Primary School, our approach to mathematics learning is grounded in research and evidence-based practices to ensure all students develop strong numeracy skills. Our mathematics program is delivered through a structured and explicit instructional model, ensuring that students build deep conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and problem-solving skills.
Mathematics is taught within a daily one hour numeracy block, where students engage in explicit instruction, guided practice, and independent problem-solving tasks. To make learning meaningful, our program emphasises real-world applications, allowing students to see the relevance of mathematics in everyday life. For example, younger students develop number sense through hands-on activities like measuring ingredients for a recipe or using money in role-play shopping scenarios. Older students engage in authentic problem-solving tasks, such as analysing data to make informed decisions, calculating budgets, or designing and measuring objects in STEM-based projects.
This approach allows teachers to cater to individual learning goals, ensuring targeted support for those who need additional reinforcement and extension opportunities for high-ability learners. By fostering a strong foundation in mathematical thinking and connecting learning to real-world contexts, we empower students to develop confidence, persistence, and a love of learning in mathematics.
